San Francisco in the almanac

San Francisco is one of the most competitive local markets in the country, and its residents are among the earliest and heaviest users of AI tools anywhere. Bay Area AEO publishes a population of 846,000 for the city, with about 730,000 adults. Applying the national AI-use rates to those adults gives the agency's three estimates: 358,000 San Franciscans who use AI chatbots, 175,000 who use one every day and 438,000 who read Google's AI Overviews.

The city packs dozens of distinct neighborhoods into 49 square miles. Each has its own commercial character: the taquerias and bars of the Mission, North Beach's Italian restaurants, Chinatown, the Asian dining corridors of the Richmond and the Sunset, the offices of SoMa and the Financial District, the Marina's boutiques and fitness studios, and the Victorian homes of the Haight, Noe Valley and Bernal Heights. Residents and commuters compete with millions of visitors for the same attention.

Questions San Francisco customers ask

Many of the companies building AI assistants are headquartered in San Francisco, and people here adopted those assistants early. Their questions name a neighborhood and a need, and the assistant replies with two or three businesses. The table lists the questions Bay Area AEO publishes for the city, with the place and trade each one names.

Published San Francisco sample questions.

Three customer groups in one city

Bay Area AEO describes three groups that shape AI questions in San Francisco. Visitors plan trips with AI and ask for restaurants near Union Square, things to do near Fisherman's Wharf or places to eat near Moscone Center. Office workers in the Financial District and SoMa ask for lunch spots, catering, dry cleaning and after-work drinks, so accurate hours and delivery details matter for businesses serving that weekday crowd.

The third group is homeowners and landlords. Victorian and Edwardian houses, along with soft-story apartment buildings, bring a steady flow of questions about seismic retrofits, rewiring, plumbing work and permits. Contractors who explain the city's requirements clearly get recommended. Across all three groups, the agency builds relevance for the specific neighborhoods a business serves, so an assistant considers it for a request about the Sunset or SoMa as well as for citywide questions.

San Francisco questions by trade

The published San Francisco questions fall across three of the four industries. The burrito, dim sum and pre-game restaurant questions belong to food and drink. The Sunset plumber belongs to home services, where older housing drives demand. The SoMa startup lawyer belongs to professional services. The industry entries print the signals each of those trades needs.

Reading the San Francisco row

The San Francisco figures sit beside the four regions in the Region index and are read the same way. Each count is the published estimate, rounded as Bay Area AEO rounds it. The neighborhood table lists the 18 districts in the order the agency gives them, from the Mission District to Russian Hill.
